Time resolved Raman spectroscopy for depth analysis of multi - layered mineral samples Chapter 3 3

چکیده
Time Resolved Raman Spectroscopy (TRRS) can provide subsurface information from multi-layered samples of transparent and translucent evaporative and silicate minerals up to several cm thick. Depth information was obtained using 3-ps pulsed laser excitation at 720 nm and a gated intensified CCD detector with stepwise increasing delay times. Blocks of different minerals were used as first, second or third layers and Raman spectra from deeper layers could be detected through 10 mm of translucent calcite and up to 40 mm of transparent halite crystals. Measurements by conventional confocal Raman, as well as Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS) were also successful in distinguishing different mineral layers. This study establishes the great potential for the use of Raman spectroscopy in future planetary exploration, where TRRS could be used as a non-invasive tool for profiling the (sub-)surface at millimetredepth resolution.

Raman Spectroscopic Techniques for Planetary Exploration: Detecting Microorganisms through Minerals.
Raman spectroscopy can provide highly specific chemical fingerprints of inorganic and organic materials and is therefore expected to play a significant role in interplanetary missions, especially for the search for life elsewhere in our solar system. A major challenge will be the unambiguous detection of low levels of biomarkers on a mineral background. In addition, these biomarkers may not be ...
متن کاملTime-resolved spatially offset Raman spectroscopy for depth analysis of diffusely scattering layers.
The objective of this study is to use time-resolved (TR) Raman spectroscopy, spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS), and a combination of these approaches to obtain high quality Raman spectra from materials hidden underneath an opaque layer. Both TR Raman and SORS are advanced techniques that allow for an increased relative selectivity of photons from deeper layers within a sample. Time-res...
متن کاملA RIGOROUS COMPARISON OF METHODS FOR MULTI-WALLED CARBON NANOTUBES PURIFICATION USING RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT’s) were synthesized using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method in a fluidized bed reactor under the flow of methane and hydrogen gases. A Cobalt-molybdenum/magnesium oxide (Co-Mo/MgO) nanocatalyst was used as the catalyst of the process. The samples were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The effects of d...
متن کاملVibrational spectroscopic study of the sulphate mineral glaucocerinite (Zn,Cu)(10)Al(6)(SO(4))(3)(OH)(32)⋅18H(2)O - a natural layered double hydroxide.
We have studied the molecular structure of the mineral glaucocerinite (Zn,Cu)(5)Al(3)(SO(4))1.5(OH)16⋅9(H2O) using a combination of Raman and infrared spectroscopy. The mineral is one of the hydrotalcite supergroup of natural layered double hydroxides. The Raman spectrum is characterised by an intense Raman band at 982cm(-1) with a low intensity band at 1083cm(-1). These bands are attributed to...

Introduction: Laser Raman spectroscopy offers the exciting opportunity to interrogate rocks in their natural geological context, preserving the mineral constituents along with their textural and morphological information (Figure 1). Microscopic Raman spectroscopy is a nondestructive means of generating two dimensional maps of mineralogy on the order of grain sizes. Because of its versatility, R...
